Reading Curriculum (also see Phonics-specific and Reading for Pleasure-specific pages)

We appreciate that reading is the gateway for children, that makes all other learning possible.

We teach reading discreetly during "Reading Skills" sessions, which begin in Y2 with an 8-week fluency block taught alongside phonics. Following this, children are assessed using Tim Rasinski's Fluency Rubric. Children identified as falling behind will receive intervention as necessary.

Our Reading programme has been planned over a 2-week cycle in collaboration with our local English hub. It is supported by John Murray's Reading Explorers scheme. Our planning cycle is progressive, beginning with a focus on fluency and vocabulary, before moving onto higher order reading skills including inference and deduction. Building lessons sequentially over time ensures that children know more and remember more as they accumulate the skills and knowledge necessary for good word recognition and language comprehension.

Everything we do in Reading prepares children for our Writing curriculum.

Reading for Pleasure and book talk is a key part of our curriculum. Class teachers aim to read a shared quality text to the children every day. Children also have opportunities to select their own RfP books, which they read alongside their reading practice book/decodable book, from their class library. Children regularly bring in books from home and discuss them during book talk sessions. This has nurtured a love of reading within many of our more reluctant readers, providing the skills they need for success in the wider curriculum.

The attached document gives further information regarding the Intent behind our Reading Curriculum, the way it is implemented, and the resulting impact.

Binbrook Reading Spine

The 5 Plagues of the Developing Reader

Our School Reading Spine has been influenced by the work of Doug Lemov.

In his book ‘Reading Reconsidered’, he points out that there are five types of texts that children should have access to in order to successfully navigate reading with confidence. These are complex beyond a lexical level and demand more from the reader than other types of books.
