French is the Foreign Language we have chosen to teach in Key Stage 2
Intent
Our aim is to create enthusiastic learners who develop positive attitudes to language learning throughout life and to contribute to the development of children’s oracy and literacy. We hope that through our Foreign Language Curriculum, children will understand more about their own culture and those of others.
Implementation
The French language is taught in discrete lessons through half-termly topics like “All about me” and “Food Glorious Food”, whereby children can apply the language skills they have learned.
The curriculum enables children to listen to and repeat French words and phrases with the correct pronunciation.
They engage in conversations; ask and answer questions and make links between some sounds, rhymes and spellings of unknown words.
The children have enjoyed learning to recite “Heads, Shoulders Knees and Toes” and “Happy Birthday”, whilst understanding and retelling stories like “The Very Hungry Dog” (which bears many similarities to the classic “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”).
Children compare traditional stories and celebrations from another culture and read and write words or conversational phrases from memory.
We teach the basics of the language and ensure that pupils have a good working vocabulary that is purposeful for everyday contexts. Teachers use their own professional judgements to assess learning and progression.
Impact
By the end of Key Stage Two pupils will have developed knowledge and skills to speak basic conversational French. It is intended that this introduction and engagement with French will provide children with confidence in speaking languages and a natural respect and curiosity for other countries, cultures, and languages. We aim to prepare children for the Key Stage 3 languages curriculum, to enable them to transfer confidently and successfully. Indeed, a French teacher at De Aston Secondary School commented to a parent of a Year 7 pupil (September 2024) who had been in our KS2, that she was impressed by her knowledge of French.
